Round breast implants are a popular choice for patients who like a substantial change in breast appearance with pronounced fullness, particularly in the upper part of the breast. As the implants are round, they provide a uniform fullness to the breasts. However, it’s important to note that round implants can also produce a very natural-looking appearance, depending on their size, profile and the amount of breast tissue the individual has.

Choosing the right implants for you will depend on various factors, such as your body type, personal goals and the amount of your existing breast tissue. Additionally, your surgeon will have to consider your breast pocket and chest wall to optimise the fit of the implant.

A benefit of round implants is that if they rotate slightly, they will look the same as they are circular in shape. Alternatively, if a teardrop-shaped implant rotates slightly, the breasts will look asymmetrical and require revision surgery.

Although a popular choice, round implants do have some limitations. For example, if someone has breasts that are a little droopy, a round implant won’t lift the breast tissue as well as a teardrop-shaped implant. Consequently, the nipples may sit too low and hang from the implant. Also, if an individual has a very tight underboob with minimal lower breast volume, then a round implant doesn’t always work as well as teardrop-shaped implants in creating a nice underboob with a well-balanced, centred nipple.

Suitable candidates for breast augmentation surgery should be in good mental and physical health, understand all surgical risks and complications and have realistic expectations regarding their surgical outcomes.

What are round breast implants made of?

Round breast implants are made of silicone gel. Although implants can also be made of saline (sterile saltwater), Dr Dona prefers not to use this type of implant, as he considers the results to be less natural-looking.

Do silicone implants come in different thicknesses?

Yes. Silicone implants are available in different consistencies. They are categorised broadly into three types: soft, medium and firm. Soft implants are (as the name suggests) softer and give a more fluid feel, while firmer gels maintain their shape even under pressure, giving a more contoured and perky appearance. Firmer gel implants also have a reduced risk of implant folding or rippling.

Do round implants come in different textures?

Yes. Round implants have a surface that is either textured or smooth.
