Breast Augmentation, a.k.a. Bilateral Augmentation Mammoplasty (BAM) or breast implants, is a surgical procedure usually performed to achieve fuller breasts. Breast Augmentation surgery is performed in a private hospital under general anaesthesia. The procedure typically takes between one and two hours.
Sometimes, Breast Augmentation is requested after pregnancy or significant weight loss to address breast shape, symmetry and volume. At other times, women seek Breast Augmentation to:
Breast implants are either round or teardrop-shaped (a.k.a. anatomical). Their surface can be either textured (with a rough surface) or smooth. Implants can have varied profiles, with some projecting further forward than others. Additionally, the consistency of the silicone gel inside the implants can differ; some are firm, while others consist of a softer gel.
To determine the right implant type for you, Doctor Dona must assess and consider many factors. Along with listening to your concerns and objectives, he will also assess your physical frame and dimensions. He must then consider the most appropriate implant type and style, the incision (scar location) and the pocket or implant placement.
Considering Breast Implant Surgery? Take the first step by arranging a consultation with Dr Dona to understand the procedure, risks, and potential outcomes in detail.
There is some pain after breast implant surgery; however, the level of pain varies between individuals. You’ll be given pain medications while in hospital. You’ll also be given pain medications to take home with you. The pain from Breast Augmentation surgery is generally described as a tightness across the chest. As Dr Dona usually places the implants under the muscle, the procedure is a little more uncomfortable than placement on top of the muscle. However, he believes this technique gives far better results.
You’ll be in ‘recovery mode’ for the first four weeks. However, it may take you longer to resume all physical activities as you did before surgery. You must also wait six weeks before you can be fitted with new bras.
Breast Augmentation surgery does not affect your ability to breastfeed.
Immediately after your surgery, your breasts will be swollen. Typically, it takes around six weeks for this swelling to settle. At around three to six months, your breasts will drop slightly and ‘settle’ into position. They will also soften somewhat at this stage.
There is no expiry date on breast implants. There is a common myth that all breast implants must be changed every 10 years, but this is not the case. Provided your breasts continue to look and feel good, there is no need for surgery. Potentially, your breast implants could last a lifetime.
