An Arm Lift (Brachioplasty) surgically removes excess skin and tissue along the upper arms. It is commonly sought by individuals who have experienced significant weight loss and are left with loose, sagging skin that does not tighten naturally.
An Arm Lift (Brachioplasty) is a surgical procedure that removes loose, excess skin and fat along the upper arms to address issues with shape and form. Often, the procedure is sought out by patients who have lost a large amount of weight. They’re left with loose, excess skin that has lost much of its elasticity and doesn’t contract to fit their arms in the way they anticipated.
Arm lift surgery is performed in a private hospital under general anaesthesia. The procedure typically takes between two and four hours.
During Brachioplasty, incisions will be made on the inside or back of your arm. The incision may extend from the underarm to just above the elbow. This can be performed in conjunction with liposuction. The underlying deep tissue layer is tightened with stitches to smooth and define the shape of the upper arm. The excessive skin is then trimmed, tightened, and sutured into place. The arm lift tightens the entire arm, from the armpit to above the elbow.
There are four types of Arm Lifts:
Suitable candidates for Arm Lift surgery have often lost a significant amount of weight. They must be able to maintain a stable weight for 12 months before undergoing surgery. Additionally, they should be in good mental and physical health, understand the risks and complications associated with the procedure and have realistic expectations regarding their surgical outcomes.

Several factors can cause excess sagging skin on the upper arm. Extreme weight loss is often a significant factor. Lifestyle and genetic factors also play a role, as skin loses its elasticity over time.
Everyone’s experience of pain after surgery is different. For some, the pain is only mild, while others can experience significant discomfort. To alleviate any pain, your anaesthetist will provide you with pain medication during your time in hospital, and will also give you pain medication to take home with you.
You’ll be fitted with a compression garment immediately after your surgery. This garment helps to manage your swelling and should be worn for at least four weeks.
The type of scar you receive from arm lift surgery depends on the procedure you have. If you only require Liposuction, you won’t have any scars, other than tiny nicks where the cannula is inserted. An Arm Lift with Minimal Incision leaves incisions where the inner arm joins the armpit. A Traditional Arm Lift (Full Brachioplasty) leaves a scar from the inner side of the elbow up to the armpit. For those who have lost a massive amount of weight and have excess skin concerns beyond their arms and onto the upper outer chest wall, an extended arm lift is required. This procedure leaves a scar from the elbow to the armpit, then down the outer chest towards the outer breast region.
If your job entails light office or desk work, you can consider returning to work approximately two weeks after surgery. You can resume jobs such as light hospitality work after four weeks, and any work involving heavy lifting can be considered after six weeks.
