A Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty) is a surgical procedure that aims to reduce the size of your breasts by removing excess breast tissue and skin while also lifting and reshaping the breasts. The primary motivations for the surgery are typically for medical and functional reasons, relieving the pain and discomfort that is often associated with heavy breasts.
Breast reduction surgery is performed in a private hospital under general anaesthesia. Typically, the procedure takes between two and three hours.
Carrying large breasts can have severe negative physical impacts on women. Breast Reduction surgery can offer the following benefits:
Suitable Breast Reduction candidates can be of any age, provided their breasts have fully developed (it is not advisable for growing teens to have Breast Reduction surgery). If candidates wish to lose weight, they must have reached their ideal weight and maintained it for 12 months. They must also be in good physical and mental health, understand all risks and complications that may occur and have realistic expectations regarding surgical outcomes.
Considering Breast Reduction? Book a consultation with Dr Dona to discuss whether this procedure is suitable for your needs and goals.
The volume of breast tissue removed is permanent. However, factors such as weight gain, pregnancy or genetics can increase the size of your breasts after surgery.
The amount of reduction achieved during Breast Reduction Surgery varies based on your individual anatomy, goals, and what is surgically appropriate. During your consultation, Dr Dona will assess your breast size, shape, skin quality, and physical symptoms to determine how much tissue can be safely and effectively removed.
Yes. One of the main reasons for Breast Reduction surgery is to reduce the considerable pain in the neck, back and shoulders caused by the weight of heavy breasts.
Losing weight before a Breast Reduction is not a prerequisite. However, if you are overweight or plan on losing weight, you must have reached your ideal weight and be confident that you can maintain this weight before you proceed with surgery.
Typically, women with very large breasts have difficulty breastfeeding as they tend to produce less milk. While it may still be possible to breastfeed after a Breast Reduction, the surgery does reduce the chance of being able to do so successfully.
