What is a Tummy Tuck?

Abdominoplasty, commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, is a common plastic surgical procedure. The tummy tuck procedure is designed first and foremost to remove excess overhanging skin around the stomach, typically experienced after massive weight changes. These body changes are most often caused by significant weight loss or going through multiple pregnancies which causes the skin around the stomach to be stretched significantly, including damage to the abdominal wall muscles.

There are three layers to the abdominal wall that need to be reconstructed in an abdominoplasty; the skin, the fatty tissue and the underlying muscle. Whether it’s due to pregnancy, or the effects of massive weight changes, the issues are similar. All of these layers are stretched, weakened or increased in size, resulting in an altered state. The surgery involves reconstructing each of these layers in a customised manner to achieve an optimal outcome.

The scar for a tummy tuck is typically hidden low on your belly and can be concealed with normal underwear.
